The Land Between the Lakes

When the Indians stopped along the riverbanks, a wildcat attacked the Indian party. Mary pushed an elder squaw out of the wildcat's path. The act gained her favor amongst the tribe, but not enough favor to release her.

The wildcat at left is located today at Historic Collinsville.

They traveled northward by canoe past an island filled with bison. Today the area is a protected area and bison and elk preserve known as The Land Between the Lakes.
In Mary's time, the land was bordered by two rivers, one of which was the Cumberland. Dams have been built, creating two lakes, from which the land gets its name.

In Songbirds are Free, a rare white bison walks through the herd and watches the Indians as they pass. White bison were revered by the Native Americans.

Today, this recreational area is also home to herds of elk.

Once past the bison, the Indians took Mary to Old Savannah Settlement, an abandoned Indian village. From there, she was taken to Shawneetown, a large Shawnee village along the banks of the Ohio...
